Super Swimming Slurpee Slugs

Materials Needed:

This is a very simple demonstration and one that will definitely catch your students' attention. Use your imagination to concoct a story about why these "slugs" (raisins) are living in this "sewer water" (soft-drink) and how you came to find out they were edible.

Just before your ready to show your class, pour the soft-drink into the container and add some raisins. As the carbon dioxide attaches to the raisins, it will make them look like their swimming. Show the class the "Swimming Sewer Slugs", and then take a swig of the "Sewer Water" and "Slugs". You're sure to get lots of "oohs" and "aahs" from your class.

After the demo, of course, explain the concept of carbon dioxide and carbonation to them and let them in on the secret so they don't go out and start eating real slugs.

Have Fun!!!
