Aliphatic polyester monomer, l-lactide
Ring-opening polymerization of this cyclic diester monomer
gives a useful aliphatic A-B polyester, polylactide.
Aliphatic polyesters are synthetic ester-linked polymers (like PET)
but with flexible aliphatic segments that give lower Tg and better organic solubility.
Polylactide (along with the d,d- and d,l-analogs) gives polymers with useful properties
and biodegradability. Uses in garbage bags and dissolvable sutures has met with limited success.
