Bend Testing

Flexural tests are very common analysis techniques for composites.  They provide strength and modulus data for materials as they are bent, not pulled or compressed.  The following schematics show simplified 3 point and 4 point bend tests.  From the load cell fittings above, one can see the nature of the experiment and the data one can obtain.

The calculations of strength and modulus depend upon the thickness squared and cubed, respectively.  Therefore, the measurements of thickness are critical.  It is also important to note the failure points.  If failure occurs at the load points, then modification are required.
