Bend Testing
Flexural
tests are very common analysis techniques for composites. They provide
strength and modulus data for materials as they are bent, not pulled or
compressed. The following schematics show simplified 3 point and
4 point bend tests. From the load cell fittings above, one can see
the nature of the experiment and the data one can obtain.
The
calculations of strength and modulus depend upon the thickness squared
and cubed, respectively. Therefore, the measurements of thickness
are critical. It is also important to note the failure points.
If failure occurs at the load points, then modification are required.
