4,4'-Diphenylmethyldiisocyanate or MDI

is a highly reactive (and expensive) monomer
used to make a variety of polyurethanes and polyureas.

It is usually reacted with a small diol such as 1,4-butanediol
followed by reaction with oligomeric diols like polyTHF.

Urethanes are extremely tough polymers used to make a variety of materials
such as foams, fibers, paints, coatings and biomedical devices.
