While no ASTM is noted for the particular coatings test specified below, solvent resistance is a very important test in the analysis of coatings and their potential application. For instance, if a coating is formulated to be applied to elastomer fluid transport line and protect it from the environment, it should not be very susceptible to hydrocarbon solvents and other solvents which could potentially break down the elastomeric, hydrocarbon based polymer hose (polypropylene, polybutylene, polyethylene, etc.).
A very good test for analyzing solvent resistance of a coating is simply to subject a coated panel to a specific solvent. A good method for doing so is to use a ballpeen hammer and some cloth wetted with solvent and rub the coated panel repeatedly until the solvent removes the coating. Pictured below is a panel with a couple methyl-ethyl ketone rubs to its credit.
